10 years ago this year Russ Hughes started the AIR Users blog, which morphed into Pro Tools Expert in 2012. To celebrate our 10-year anniversary we ran a competition with a Pro Audio gear and software prize pot worth over $30,000. One of the prizes was a bundle from our friends at Accusonus.
The competition closed on December 31st 2018 and we can announce that the winner is David Grant
“My interest and development of my career has been a process since before I graduated from high school. Initially I started playing keyboards and writing music with the goal of a music career. Along with a great guitar player friend we put together a band, did a few gigs around town playing covers and our originals. At that point my interests turned to learning how to record our music and so I made the big move to Los Angeles to take Audio/Video Engineering. From there it was a pretty quick progression into the recording and post production industry. I was very lucky, upon graduating to be hired at a small mom & pop studio as an engineer doing music/MIDI/vocal tracking & mixing on mostly self produced artists, mainly Hip-Hop & Rap style. But they also were digging into audio post and I started tracking ADR & Foley sessions. The owners of that studio had their eyes on bigger things and shortly after starting with them they built a very successful Audio Post facility and I stayed with them throughout that journey. I’ve been working as a Sound Editor ever since (1991), working on Feature Films, TV Series, TV Movies, Short Flims, Student films. Pretty much anything I can get my hands on in this every changing industry. The majority of the work I do is Dialogue/ADR editing along with SFX/Sound Design/Mixing. I’ve been grateful to have developed a nice imdb credits list and continue to work on as many things as I can. This industry has changed so much from those early days of tape based recording & editing, and it’s software like what Accusonus develops that add so much to the people, like me, that work behind the scenes in crafting the Films and TV series that we all come to love. As an observation along my career I’ve found that with technology has come a reduced schedule in our work which makes it even more important to have the necessary tools at our disposal to meet the tight deadlines that we work with. The “Fix it in Post” idea has become the norm as production mixers are sometimes forced to go with less than optimal setup times, and with digital recording methods being a bit less forgiving than analogue was, there seems to be more production sound clean up work required & expected of us when it gets to us in the final audio post. So Accusonus and other software become a critical component in the ultimate final results."
Thanks, I look forward to digging into the Accusonus bundle, I know it will be another tool in my arsenal.”

In this test we put three popular de-clipper plug-ins up against each other in a blind listening test. Quality de-clipper plug-ins, such as the three products featured in this test, will repair and reconstruct clipped peaks lost (or not recorded) in the tracking process resulting in audio that sounds cleaner and, most importantly, usable. Clipping is a form of distortion artefact… not the type you want. Vote for the example you prefer the sound of.
