Dynamics processing is something of a dark art. What is superficially simple quickly gets complex when something as variable as real music gets processed. This is why so many explanations use similar examples, with a simple input the function of the main parameters becomes more apparent. While this is no substitute for actual experience using dynamics processors on complex signals, it is still very useful and making the input as simple as it can possibly be is a useful method for understanding your tools.
In this extended Premium Tutorial Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers looks at the parameters of a gate, a better staring point than a compressor, using an unusual input, a 20 Hz sine wave. using this and an oscilloscope he investigates the action the main parameters have on this signal and uses this to address processing a kick drum.
