Giulio Scimone
My name is Giulio, am a 32 years old sound engineer based in Palermo, Italy, my passion and love for music and sounds started when I was a teenager; I was trying to play music and composing my own tunes at the time, in bands and on my own. I discovered how amazing it was to manipulate sounds, record them and mix them and turn them into the soundscapes and quality which I had in mind, or at least I tried to do that with amateur results back then! I got so passionate and interested in all ways of recording, editing, shaping, manipulating sounds from the tracking stage to the mix stage and on to the final mastering stage. I also am interested in music theory and history, that’s why I graduated at the University of Palermo attending the BA degree in Musicology back in 2009. Straight after my degree, I wanted to pursue more scientific, practical studies about engineering and physics of audio, that’s why I moved to London and I studied the audio engineering and music production main course at Alchemea college of audio engineering that was based in Angel, London. That’s when the doors of audio knowledge truly opened up before me, I could learn from knowledgeable teachers such as Marcel van Limbeek, Jon Olliffe, Alex Burak, Neil Pickles, Christian Huant, Jonathan Espinosa, Mat McKinley and some incredible freelance tutors like Anthony Lim. I am very thankful to all of them for the knowledge and expertise they passed on to me with their ideas, visions, tastes.
After finishing the course at Alchemea I worked shortly at Abbot street studios, Hackney, London, as an intern and freelance recording engineer. After then Alchemea offered me a job as studio sound course supervisor, which was amazing as experience and learning again because I could supervise the students and their learning curves in the same course that I had attended, helping them solve their troubles just like other supervisors solved mine during my sessions in college. This boosted amazingly my troubleshooting skills, plus working every week with all the great teachers, that I quoted before, helped me expand my audio knowledge frequently. I could work every week with the SSL G and Duality consoles that Alchemea had, together with some great pieces of outboard gear, like Otari MTR-90 two inches tape machines and all sorts of compressors and EQs, reverbs and alike analogue great plus a very vast digital plugins collection that the college owned. While working part time at Alchemea I also got a job at Smokehouse Studio as an assistant and freelance engineer, where I could assist the manager Jonathan McMillan in busy hybrid sessions, with big names also like the Sun Biz sessions we did for The Sun digital content website. I worked with an incredible sounding Cadac E series 64 channels console in all sorts of scenarios like tracking, mixing, overdubs, production of all sorts; I could keep learning and better my engineering skills on a daily basis working in two great places such as these.
A bit later Jonathan McMillan bought the BluePro mastering company from its owner and offered me an opportunity to be an apprentice mastering engineer working for him, which am amazingly grateful for. I had the chance to do something I always aspired for, mastering and be part in the final stage of the music making. I could work as an apprentice by mastering music projects for several emerging and established names, always having loads of good words in return for my new mastering work, which I was not expecting at all while at the beginning of the process of understanding this part of audio science. After 5 years and a half of great studying and working in London I decide to leave my jobs with these 3 companies and fly back to my hometown in Italy, Palermo, where the audio industry is quite small and poor and I think a lot needs to be done, where I think the great knowledge I was passed on can be very helpful to build a nice audio industry here. Nowadays I work freelance for all sorts of clients, mostly local but also I get some jobs from abroad from time to time. It’s very nice to help emerging artists and composers find their way in the market by working for them and trying to give them the good sound quality they are expecting from me. Am mostly working on fully digital music mixing and mastering with my PT 11 DAW setup and a MOTU 896 MK3 converter with great plugins I bought from Soundtoys, Elysia, Brainworx, Slate digital, Eiosis, Plugin Alliance, McDsp and others. Sometimes I work on some recordings mostly with bands and authors by dry hiring some of the few studios around here, I also get to work freelance mastering music for some projects with the most notable studio around here which is Indigo Studio owned by Fabio Rizzo who is a great producer. In the past two years, I also got into the science of audio forensics which can be really challenging at times!
In the near future, I would also like to teach audio knowledge to the local people here and share all the great engineering that I have been taught by my mentors.”
It’s amazing for me to have won this copy of Train you ears EQ edition for audio engineers, thanks to this software I can keep on learning and better my critical listening skills to provide always a better service for my clients, it’s great and I thank you guys at Pro Tools Expert for this amazing gift! Keep up your amazing work which helps us all loads!

I'm really pleased with this win, Thanks Pro Tools Expert! It has come at just the right time, I'm between projects at the moment as my studio suffered a water leak and is completely disrupted at the moment. While I wait for the insurance claim to be paid, I will be 'training my ears' in earnest! looking forward to the benefits this will provide for me as I gain expertise in frequency recognition during my enforced break!
Thanks again Pro Tools Expert, brilliant!
