When trying to find the best close mic placement for recording guitar amps I’ve found that cranking up the amp until it’s hissing nice and loud, putting on some headphones, and listening to the hiss change in the headphones as you move the mic around really speeds up my decision making process with where it’s going to stay.
When the hiss sounds ‘right’ I stop moving the mic and start hitting record!
Remember to keep the guitarist from fiddling with their instrument while you’re inches from the face cranked at full blast though!
