David Finnamore’s tip about using the Cloud to hear how your mixes translate through different speaker systems was great. Here is an extension of it. On the Mac, you can use Airfoil, an inexpensive app, that will stream the output of any app to an Airport Express. So you don’t even need to bounce to hear your mix on the stereo in the other room; this saves time (it’s in near real-time) and disk space, and preserves sound quality (stream is in PCM wav format). Bonus: it will also stream to an iPad or Macbook, so you can use those as your grotboxes. (I have no connection to this company or product except as a satisfied user)
James responds - My final “test” audio system is my car. I have the standard stereo that is fitted to many Ford models so its about a cheap as it gets. If it sounds good in the car and remember many of your listeners are going to be in cars then its good to go. Sony in the US even build a mock up of a car in one of their studios to fake listening to your track in an auto environment…… Might have been cheaper to just park a car in the studio!
