The API 500 Series, EQ Plug-In Collection for UAD-2 hardware and Apollo interfaces, captures the punch, low-frequency transparency, and ultra-tight imaging of API's iconic 550 and 560 Series EQs.
With unique filter shapes, complex band interactions and musical filter amp distortions, the 550A and 560 Series EQs were used on recordings throughout the '60s and '70s. The API 500 Series EQ Collection were modelled on pristine early '70s units provided by Ross Hogarth and Capitol Studios to give accurate, end-to-end tonal qualities of these legendary hardware EQ's.
The Original 500 Series Hardware EQ’s
550A (early EQ's from API) used 2520 op-amps and had 3 band EQ's with 11 Frequencies; had hi and low pass filters.
550B (2nd generation EQ from API) used 2520 op-amps with 4 band EQ's and came out to 28 Frequencies; had hi and low pass filters
550L was an integrated circuit EQ made for large-frame consoles and was based on the 550B, but used 2510 op-amps, with 4 band EQ's/28Freq.
560 (3rd generation EQ from API) made into a graphic EQ format with 10 bands, but the same integrated circuit as the 550L, but using the same op-amps as the 550A/B, the 2520.
All of them had proportional Q.
Transform LUNA Recording System into API's Flagship Analog Console
The API Vision Console Emulation Bundle turns LUNA into a full API console. Track in real time through API preamp and channel modules, then mix with API's analog summing and bus compression, switching between low-latency tracking using Apollo DSP, and native mixing within LUNA. You can create new audio, instrument, and bus tracks with API Vision Console elements pre-assigned, building sessions within the complete Vision console emulation experience.
UAD 550L Parametric EQ
Based on the 550A, introduced in 1971, was the standard channel EQ module on API's first consoles. Three overlapping bands of parametric EQ, independent 50 Hz to 15 kHz band-pass filter, and individually selectable peaking or shelving modes make it the perfect tool for getting drums and guitars to stand out in the mix.
UAD 560L Graphic EQ
Based on the 560, ten band graphic EQ, the 560L is ideal for shaping your mix with surgical precision. In addition, API's proprietary Proportional Q widens bandwidth at lower boost/cut levels and narrows it at higher levels, giving you more musical control over precise bands of your mix.
In this video for Production Expert, Brent March demonstrates the difference in sound and tone when applying the 550L and 560L.
