The biggest new feature of Eucon 2021.6 was Custom Knob Mapping. In this free tutorial brought to you with the support of Avid Julian Rodgers demonstrates his new custom map for Avid’s EQIII 7 Band EQ.
What Is Custom Knob Mapping?
Prior to this latest release of Eucon knob assignments were set by the developer. A look-up table of parameter assignments was accessed by the surface and these assignments were fixed and because they were set by the developer, they could lack consistency.
If you wanted to access parameters assigned to different pages on your surface, there wasn’t a way to bring them together into your preferred locations. The smaller the surface the more of an issue this becomes so for example for users of a single S1 with only 8 parameters accessible at a time this will be particularly useful, especially when controlling complex plugins with lots of parameters like reverbs.
What Is Different About Julian’s Custom Map?
Rather than just create an arbitrary custom map Julian has created a custom map which will address his principal issue with the default map. Rather than map every parameter, Julian has chosen to map only some of the parameters, and one parameter twice.
Taking his lead from simple console EQs, he has created a simple 3 band EQ with an HPF preset at 75Hz, a low and a high shelf and a mid band set to 1KHz. From a single row of 8 encoders Julian can quickly get a sound and if he needs to access the HPF frequency or MF Q he can get to it from the same knob but on the next page. He also mapped the output level to the last encoder on both pages to make sure it is always availble.
