With the upcoming M1X Apple Silicon Macs due in the next month or so, together with the release of Studio One 5.4 from PreSonus that nows runs natively with all its own plugins on Apple Silicon, when do you think you will buy an Apple Silicon computer for your studio?
As well as Studio One 5.4, Apple’s own Logic Pro X already runs natively on Apple Silicon, however, Pro Tools may still need to run via Rosetta 2 for a while. That said, if you are running Studio One 5.4 or Logic Pro X, they will only run natively if all your plugins are supported to run natively on Apple Silicon.
If there is even one plugin in your plugins folder that isn’t Apple Silicon supported, then the DAW and all the plugins and the DAW will be forced to run under Rosetta with the performance hit that we have shown in our Studio One 5.4 article. If you are not sure whether all the plugins you use will run natively on Apple Silicon then you can check our searchable Apple Silicon Compatibility database.
Taking all of this into consideration are you planning to switch to an Apple Silicon studio computer? If so, how soon are you planning to make the switch?
Our questions, intentionally split into two categories of professional and hobbyist is ‘Apple Silicon Macs - How Soon Will You Be Buying One?’ We suspect we know the answer but we’d love to gauge the feeling within the community.
