One of the biggest sound effects companies Sound Ideas has bought one of the leading online sound effects websites, Sounddogs.com. We have the story.
The History Of Sounddogs
Just 2 years after Amazon was launched as a book seller and before iTunes was a thing, the idea to build an online sound storefront was conceived; and on May 1st, 1997 the Sounddogs.com site was born. Over the years, Sounddogs.com acquired the sound library assets and trademarks of Todd-AO / Soundelux and continued with its own recording projects, building distribution partnerships with major sound libraries around the world. The Sounddogs.com site now offers over 1 million sounds for immediate purchase, license and download and it is the intention of Sound Ideas to not only maintain but grow its online presence.
The History Of Sound Ideas
Founded in 1978, Toronto-based Sound Ideas was the first company to release sound effects libraries on compact disc, and the first to release the sound effects library of a major motion picture studio. It is a division of The Brian Nimens Corporation Limited. Sound Ideas offers over 500,000 sound effects, production elements and royalty free music tracks for television, film sound design, game development, post-production, interactive media and any other professional audio production use you can throw at them.
Sound Ideas has a long history of collaboration with Sounddogs.com and its owner Rob Nokes. Brian Nimens, the owner of Sound Ideas told us…
“Rob is a leader in the industry. His reputation as a sound recorder, designer and editor is unmatched; and the skill with which he has developed and grown the Sounddogs.com brand and site is remarkable. I have known Rob for decades and I am thrilled that Sound Ideas will be able to move forward with the Sounddogs.com name.”
Rob Nokes, founder of Souddogs.com added…
“Brian was among the first sound effects producers to provide content to the Sounddogs.com site and he is still a large contributor. Our friendship goes back longer than either of us might like to admit, but it gives me peace of mind to know that the Sounddogs.com site and brand will continue as a force under his direction”.
What We Think About This Acquisition
This is an interesting coming together of two trailblazers in the sound effects world that perhaps have lost some of their edge with the springing up of so many independent sound effects sites, enabling small sound effects collectors to sell their recordings direct to the end user. Also Sound Ideas needed to get an online sales presence and the acquisition of Sounddogs has instantly given them this. That said they will need to innovate if they want to stand out in what is a much more crowded market now.
