There has been some fun made of the new Apple Mac Pro 7,1 new style cheese-grater as to whether it could function as a cheese grater as well as a clever ad campaign by IKEA, or where a cheese grater could become a computer? We have the story, images and a video all for a bit of fun….
Soon after the launch there were the expected comments on social media about the new Mac Pro computer’s similarity to a cheese grater. Here are a couple of tweets as examples…

IKEA Cheese Grater Ad
Next came a clever ad created by advertising company The Smarts, for IKEA Bulgaria who debuted their “cheese-grater” ad online, which said “Designed for apples” to poke fun at the tech giant’s latest product with a cheeky “cheese grater” ad.
We think it is a subtle but clever piece of copywriting. For example if you look closely you'll see that there's a lower-case letter "i" in the name of IKEA's meal preparation range, IDEALISK, in another subtle poke at Apple's product names.
Next we have a cheese grater turned into tower computer. Tom Owad on his blog applefritter released the ‘iCanWait’ computer for those people who “need to render complex 3d models, or edit 8K video, but can’t afford a new Mac Pro.”
iCanWait is a working Mac Pro alternative (possibly not!) using a 3.5-inch LCD screen and pocket-sized Raspberry Pi computer.
Tom explains that the cheese grater, which serves as the stand, is, of course, sold separately and goes on to say…
“The stand is a bargain at $3.44. Competing stands cost 290 times that amount.”
So could the clever grill on the 2019 Mac Pro actually grate cheese?
YouTuber machinist Winston Moy has managed to recreate the clever circular structure of the new Mac Pro grille designed to let as much air through as possible, whilst being structurally sound. Using his Shapeoko mill Winston put Jony Ive’s work to the test explaining in the video’s description…
“Since no one outside of Cupertino has yet to lay hands on the Mac Pro, I figured I'd try to recreate that instantly recognizable texture of the Mac Pro on the Shapeoko. Out of aluminum, of course... Er. ALUMINIUM, sorry.”
The video of the entire process is quite fascinating, but you will have to wait till the end to see if the Mac Pro grill could have a future use by being recycled into a cheese grater when it reaches the end of it’s life.
