In a new format we are producing videos offering tips and solutions to common problems in under a minute. James explains the importance of those little knurled washers that should be on most conventional style microphone stands.
Whatever you do, next time you pull a microphone stand out of the cupboard don’t take the washers off. These are really important. Firstly the little knurled washers stop the inner boom arm falling into the main boom arm. Not lost forever I know, but it’s annoying. The main reason the washers are there is to act as a lock and tension release so you can easily remove the mic clip or shock-mount when you are finished. It also gives a good solid mounting point for the clip or shock-mount to the stand.
If your mic stand washers are missing you can always get replacements. Here is the UK, you can get a lot of spares from Studio Spares.
