In this free extract from the fascinating Lifeboats series from PureMix in which 6 different engineers mix the same song, giving an unprecedented look into the difference in approaches, Grammy award winning mixer Andrew Scheps uses iZotope’s Trash distortion plug-in to set up a subtle but powerful parallel treatment for the drums in “Lifeboats”.
Assisting The Arrangement With Changes In Processing
Cranked up the effect of Trash is extreme, a deep EQ cut is used to remove the undesirable effect the distortion has on the cymbals but the parallel path allows the beneficial effect of the distortion on the kick and snare to be dialled in to taste and to be used with mute automation to add variety to the chorus and to signpost the changing sections of the song even when the arrangement remains relatively static.
