Eddie Jones from Avid has confirmed a bug that was reported on the DUC regarding the Pro Tools Control app and Pro Tools 2019.5 together.
Please be aware that this article has been updated twice to reflect changes in the thread on the DUC.
Michael C started the thread by reporting…
“Installed new ProTools 2019.5 and the new Eucon 19.5 version and have some odd things going on with the PT Control app.
I love that you can scroll to tracks, but it disables the 'Play' on my spacebar Mac keyboard. It also won't let me highlight a track in the Edit window or Mix window on my studio monitor; it makes that track I click on jump to the top of the Edit window but it doesn't highlight. If I click on a clip now in my Edit window (on my studio monitor with a trackball) it makes that clip jump to a different selection.
None of the Selector Tool short cuts work on the Mac keyboard; you have to use a trackball or mouse to select things.”
Ed Douglas added…
“More EuControl oddness; In channel mode, I used to select an insert and have those windows open and follow as I moved up and down the tracks with the "p" or ";" keys. Now after a few moves down, even though the track name & selection is correct in PT|Control, The plug in window opened is off by one, then goes away entirely as I continue to select other tracks.
Definitely BUSTED in PTU 2019.5 and EuControl 19.5 under MacOS 10.13.6.”
Eddie Jones from Avid jumped on very quickly and offered to see if they could reproduce the bug Ed Douglas was experiencing and just as quickly came back and said…
“Yes, confirmed here as a bug. Sorry, we'll fix next release. (and it won't be anywhere near as long as this one!)”
Michael C then reported more challenges…
On the app if I shift control and click on a track in the app, it freezes my Mac keyboard and certain things on our trackballs/mouse. If I close the app everything is still messed up and we have to close ProTools and reboot.”
Update and Clarification
Michael Hurwitz reported that he was also having “issues with the Spacebar”.
Eddie then asked Michael H if he had just the spacebar, or the other issues from the very first post in this thread and Michael H replied that yes, “the other issues as well”.
Following the comments below from Eddie Jones from Avid, there at least 2 different sets of issues in this thread and unfortunately when Eddie referred to “other issues from the very first post” that was the issues Michael C reported which included the Spacebar problem, which has been backed up by Michael H. All of this has led to confusion about what issues had been confirmed or not.
To clarify, from Eddie’s comments to this article he is NOT confirming the Spacebar bug but he is confirming the issue with the "p" or ";" keys.
Eddie has now posted this on the DUC thread…
“I'd like a tally of users who are seeing the spacebar not working after installing EUCON 19.5 issue. Anyone seeing this should try uninstalling EUCON and all prefs using the 19.5 installers and reinstalling. (The other P and ; issue we know about and don't need any more info on it)”
So if anyone has issues with the Spacebar that Michael C and Michael H have reported then please do report it here, or perhaps even better, on the thread on the DUC.
We understand that Avid are already working on the issue with the "p" or ";" keys but understandably there is no news as to when confirmed bug may be fixed but if you use Pro Tools together with the Pro Tools app then you might want think about what you do until Avid squash this bug.
Update 2
Michael Hurwitz who was the second person to report the unconfirmed issue with the Spacebar has now reported…
“I did the uninstall and remove pref's, then re-install. So far, appears to be working correctly now (space bar issue). Thanks.”
This just leaves the OP - ‘michael c’ who has not responded.
More Frequent Bug Fix Releases?
Perhaps Avid should consider smaller, and more importantly, more frequent bug fix releases that aren’t restricted by feature update releases - especially when so many professionals depend on Pro Tools. After all the whole year.month change to update releases was so that Avid could be more agile and response to fixes and features more quickly, but it hasn’t been born out in reality as much as it could. What do you think?
