Lindell Audio and Plugin Alliance have released the TE-100, an emulation of one of the rarest hardware EQ's in the word, with 12-tubes in one mono unit, the Kline & Hummel's UE-100.
More About The Kline & Hummel's UE-100
Before the Kline & Hummel's UE-100 came along hardware equalisers had to be developed with a specific purpose in mind, which meant that engineers to setup different EQ types in one signal chain to get the sound they wanted. When released in 1961, the Klein & Hummel UE-100 Universal Equaliser changed all that.
The all-tube minimum phase EQ design used six discrete filter modules to create a collection of band-pass filters that could create dynamic curves for any application from source mixing to vocal tracking to mastering. Whilst some earlier UE-100s were used to filter out junk low and high frequencies when printing to tape and vinyl, it quickly became commonplace to take advantage of the unique push-button frequency selection providing an easy way to not only recall settings, but also alter them on the fly while recording a performance. The UE-100 became known for its musically warm curves and precise response, offering a myriad of possibilities for treating frequencies by boosting and/or cutting across the spectrum to shape sounds “like a Pultec on steroids.”
The original UE-100® EQs are now extremely rare but producer/mixer/engineer Rafa Sardina, who has 12 Grammy wins and 35 nominations, owns 10 of them and because they are so rare a stereo pair is likely to set you back upwards of $7,000.
Moving Onto The Lindell TE-100 Emulation
That tube-powered universal sound and innovative behaviour from K&H is now available in plugin form. The Lindell TE-100 is designed to be an exacting emulation of the original hardware EQ. Right down to the pushbuttons on the interface and the all-tube filter bypass, the TE-100 has been designed by Lindell Audio and Plugin Alliance to re-create this piece of German audio history.
