“…October 26th, 2012!”
windowsteamblog.com blogged :
” Steven Sinofsky announced at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting that customers will be able to get Windows 8 – whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC – starting on October 26th.”
Right now from a Pro Tools User point of view, We really don’t know anything about Avid’s road map for Windows 8 Support.
Today I installed the Windows 8 64 bit Consumer preview build on a fresh hard drive in my desktop system, and although far from a release candidate I thought it was worth giving Pro Tools 10.2 a try.
Unfortunately the news isn’t good, The install went fine, but my HD Accel cards did not get their drivers and no amount of fiddling allowed them to get antiquated with the Win7 drivers included in the PT10.2 build.
So by the looks of it Avid have some work to do there for a start, but sadly I personally feel they will not support Win8 for HD TDM hardware and win7 will be where the development will stop, although support will continue as promised (note the differences between development and support), but that just my hunch and personal opinion, lets wait and see.
So next I thought I would try again with ASIO hardware.
I successfully installed my Behringer USB mixer that I use to record my tutorial videos.
The installer ran fine and the mixer found its drivers without a problem, So that was an encouraging start.
The Pro Tools 10.2 software install had previously completed fine so after a reboot I launched Pro Tools.
The startup plugin scan completed and just as I thought Pro Tools was about to open, a string of DAE errors popped up and PT quit itself.
Several tries later in various attempts as Windows Administrator, XP SP3 Compatibility mode etc etc… I decided to admit defeat.
The problems i encountered may well have been due to my choice of audio hardware but without anything else at hand to try, my trial ended there,
So now what?
well until we either get a release candidate of Windows 8 in order to try again, Or a compatibility road map statement from Avid we wait…………
If you have tried Pro Tools with a Windows 8 build and had better luck than i have do please let us know!
