I’m getting some rumours that Avid have future proofed HD Native and HD-X from the possible demise of Mac Pro machines and PCi based connectivity by creating a new Thunderbolt-connected expansion chassis system.
HD users are no strangers to the concept of HD Expansion chassis, they have been used in previous systems to add more card slots to HD based systems.
With NAMM looming, there is the possibility of an announcement, but don’t hold your breath.
When I asked some Avid people about Apple dropping the Mac Pro, they responded with ‘don’t worry, we’re on it.’ After some more poking around hints were made to a Thunderbolt connected host system. This makes perfect sense and with the recent news that Intel have now opened Thunderbolt up to Windows based systems, then Avid are not putting all their eggs in one platform.
As usual, nothing confirmed, but blog regulars will know that we are normally on the money and try to avoid the more silly ‘Avid to produce a Unicorn from frozen DNA’ type rumours. Watch this space.
