In this video review, Pro Tools Expert Technical Editor, James Ivey takes a look at the Gain, 2 channel microphone pre-amp by Italian company Teknosign.  This is a mic pre with a twist. Firstly this unit sounds great but, if you really get into tweaking with the gain and the attenuation controls you can dial in some very expressive and characterful tones from those of the Classic Neve and API like sounds to super clean SSL and modern Class-A tonality. 

The Teknosign Gain also has digital control allowing the user to save custom tone settings to the unit (8 at a time) or hook the unit up to your PC or Mac and control all the functions by USB using their very simple yet effective GUI. 

James puts the Gain to work on a rock track using it to record kick drum, Snare drum then floor toms to create a big rock drum sound. He then uses it to record a single Shure SM57 on a distorted guitar amplifier.  Bass is recorded using the Gain as a high-quality DI, and to finish James records lead and backing vocals.
