Review - Audified TNT Executor Vocal And Speech Processor Plugin

The TNT Voice Executor is the latest release from Audified which they describe as a "unique utilitarian plug-in offering no-nonsense processing of vocal and spoken word tracks". So in this review Mike is going see what it can do.

Overview

This is a voice processing plugin with minimal controls. Essentially you select a preset and adjust the Drive control to determine how much processing you want. It picks up on a plugin design trend where all the work is done under the hood and there are relatively few options to adjust on the user interface. Most of the options are in the Presets menu, with the presets grouped into male and female vocals, Speech and a Specials menu.

What Does It Sound Like?

The first example is an unprocessed film documentary voiceover. From the Speech group I chose the Male Speech Natural  preset. Note how a selection of the indications light up, but be aware these are only indicators, you cannot disable the processor sections from here. You wind in the Drive button to get more or less of the processing effect.

Next I tried a female film documentary voiceover selecting the Female Speech Natural preset. As there wasn’t that much gain reduction, to get more compression I increased the input levels and pulled down the output level to compensate.

Then a radio music documentary voiceover. As this will have music underscoring it needs a more compressed and clear VO to cut through the music beds without having to push them down too far. For this one I chose the Male Speech Clear preset, which seems to have eq as well as compression.

There is another interesting preset called Male Speech Huge and this would appear to have some LF boost and is great for that radio DJ sound.

Before we finish I demonstrated a couple of the presets in the Specials menu. 'What U Say?' which could be used as a dodgy PA effect…. and 'Hello Apollo', which has a radio comms effect with a very long delay….

Final Thoughts

It is a preset driven voice and vocal processor, with minimal controls, which can be a little restrictive, but once you get the hang of it you can get it do do the necessary. I would prefer if the section indicators were switches as well so you could disable processing sections. There is also no way to save your own variations of the presets within the plugin but of course you can use the Pro Tools presets option to save your variations.

It does appear to be aimed at the non audio specialist with a view to be able to process speech and vocals easily and without lots of training and understanding of what is going on, but is that really the right thing to do with dynamics and EQ which are so dependent on the content?  I am not sure, but if you want a tool that will process speech quickly and easily and get you result without lots of controls to adjust then you should check out TNT Executor from Audified.
