We Clean Up Drums In Pro Tools, Logic Pro And Studio One - See How They Do It

CHALLENGE 2

Have you ever wondered how different DAWs handle different challenges? All DAWs have their strengths and weaknesses so at the Experts, we decided to set three of the top DAWs; Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Studio one, different challenges to see how easy/hard each one is.

It’s not a shoot-out per se but more of a comparison, these challenges are not here to convince you to change DAW. Firstly, we hope they will help someone looking to clean up audio on drum tracks in one of the main DAWs. Secondly, you may use more than one DAW, be an expert in one of them but only use the other from time-to-time, this should help you.

Clean Up Audio On Drum Tracks

For the first challenge, we wanted to see how Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Studio One handled cleaning up the audio on drum tracks. This scenario is something that can happen in the real world, engineers and mixers will often clean up drum tracks to reduce spill affecting the mix.

What Is Cleaning Up Audio On Drum Tracks?

Cleaning up the audio on drum tracks is a simple technique, it’s an alternative to using a noise gate. The aim is to clean spill from other tracks on a drum multitrack. It’s a task that involves editing out the unwanted audio and leaving the good stuff. It means finding each hit, removing the unwanted audio and applying fades on the good audio. The front fade reduces the chance of clicks on the audio clip and the back fade gives a smooth decay on drums like toms.

More Challenges To Come

There will be more challenges over the coming weeks and we hope by doing this you’ll see the strengths and weaknesses of each DAW.

So imagine a triangular boxing ring, in the red corner we have Julian Rodgers for team Pro Tools. In the green corner, we have Eli Krantzberg for team Logic Pro. In the blue corner, we have Russ Hughes for team Studio One.

We hope you have as much fun watching these as we have had making them.

After watching, let us know which workflow you prefer.
