PSP auralControl - First Look

PSP Audioware’s latest plugin release – auralControl – provides a quick and convenient way to make adjustments to individual channels of a surround mix or stem. Paul Maunder takes a closer look…

PSP auralControl is a multichannel plug-in designed for tracking, mixing and mastering. It allows you to individually adjust level, polarity, bandwidth and timing for each individual channel in the multichannel set. Currently it’s Pro Tools AAX only but Audio Units and VST3 versions are due later this year. It supports channel formats from stereo all the way up to 7.1.2, which means it could be used on a Dolby Atmos bed if required.

The plug-in automatically recognises the channel format but you can manually select from the channel setup menu if needed. I tried it on stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 content and it correctly identified the channel configuration in each case.

Each channel within the plug-in provides a delay control from 0 to 250ms, a low pass filter which goes from 60Hz all the way up to 30kHz and a high pass filter which can be set from 10Hz to 10kHz. Channels also have a solo, mute and polarity button along with a fader for level control.

PSP auralControl provides a convenient way to rebalance multichannel stems, to adjust channel delay times or to conveniently solo channels within a surround mix. This could be useful if you wanted to listen to just the surrounds, for example, in a 5.1 stem.

As you might expect, the faders within the plug-in can be automated so this provides a way to ride levels over time and adjust the relative balance of the various channels. Channels can be linked together for collective control and this linking can also be reversed, allowing you to do things such as bringing up front levels while simultaneously reducing rears.

This is a pretty straight forward plug-in in terms of functionality but it provides a quick and convenient way to make adjustments to individual channels of a surround mix or stem. Take a look at the video below to see it in action.

PSP auralControl is available now with introductory pricing until 30th September 2022 and you can try it for free for 30 days.
