Placing Foley Sounds In A Scene With LiquidSonics Cinematic Rooms

In this article and video, Paul Maunder explores how LiquidSonics Cinematic Rooms Professional can be used on foley sounds to cleverly place them in the environment portrayed within a scene.

Cinematic Rooms Professional from LiquidSonics is a reverb which was built from the ground up to work in modern surround formats up to 7.1.6. For post production, it offers some of the most convincing simulations of room reverbs, with advanced but accessible controls giving in-depth adjustability over a wide range of parameters affecting room acoustics.

In the video below we demonstrate how Cinematic Rooms Professional can be used on foley sounds to help place them in the environment portrayed within a scene. There are several factors where Cinematic Rooms excels and offers greater control than others. One is the way in which it deals with pre-delay. The pre-delay control in Cinematic Rooms (and indeed all of the Liquidsonics reverb plug-ins) only affects the late reverberation. This means that the reflections, which were designed to work in perfect harmony with the source for clean and convincing spatialisation, don’t become dramatically unglued from the sound.

Another control which can help to add a little extra distance to the reverb is the reflection pattern. Adjusted by the Proximity control, this also plays a part in the perception of room size and should be considered when working with foley and trying to recreate an acoustic space.

One of the drawbacks of some surround reverbs is that there’s no option to adjust the various channels independently. Fortunately, Cinematic Rooms Professional has this covered. The surround editing planes controls allow you to set independent decay times for the front, rear, centre, side and, in the case of Dolby Atmos, height channels.

Take a look at the video to see all of this in action.
