Parallel Vocal Compression The Michael Brauer Way

‘Brauerizing’ is the name of the unique approach to mixing adopted by Michael Brauer. His technique is distinctive, specifically in terms of its use of compression. For years Michael worked with a console and an extensive collection of hardware but more recently has moved to an In The Box workflow using plugins and Avid S1 control surfaces.

pureMix have worked with Michael to present a detailed video series on his technique. We reported on this in an article in October. In this free video extract from pureMix Michael explains the effect of his technique on the most important material of all - the vocals. He also reflects on how his technique has changed over time.

Multiple Parallel Vocal Compressors

Using multiple compressors in parallel highlights how the different compressors are used as much for their tone as they are for dynamic control, with different compressors being blended together to create a ‘composite’ vocal with different characteristics which Michael describes anatomically as ‘head’, ‘throat’ and ‘chest’, balancing them in much. the same way as a mixer might blend different mics on a guitar cabinet to create an ideal tone.

It’s a fascinating insight into Michael’s process. To learn more click the button below.
