macOS Ventura Compatibility - The Ultimate Pro Audio Guide

Apple has announced that macOS 13 Ventura will be released to the public on October 24th 2022. In this article, we will be sharing up-to-date information, as we get it from brands and the community, about which pro audio applications and plug-ins do and don't work with macOS Ventura, as well as other related issues which affect pro audio users. This article will be constantly updated as the information and compatibility status change.

With the release of macOS Ventura, Apple jumps up one full integer between two consecutive macOS updates for a second time. macOS 13 Ventura continues to cement Apple’s transition to Apple Silicon as we start to see some Apple Silicon only features. Even so, there are still a number of the tools we use that are not ready to run natively on Apple Silicon, so we are going to continue to use the services of Rosetta 2, which enables Intel-coded apps and plugins to run in Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura on Apple Silicon computers.

If you want to learn more about how Rosetta 2 and Universal 2 will impact audio applications including DAWs and plugins then read our articles Apple Silicon - A Developer Helps To Explain The Impact and Apple Silicon - How This Will Affect You And Other Audio Professionals.

Support Dropped For Some Older Macs

With macOS 13 Ventura, Apple has dropped support for Macs from 2014 to 2016. This is the full compatibility list published by Apple…

  • iMac (2017 and later)

  • ‌iMac‌ Pro

  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)

  • MacBook Pro (2017 and later)

  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)

  • Mac mini (2018 and later)

  • MacBook (2017 and later)

This means the following Macs, which were previously supported by Monterey, are no longer supported with Apple’s latest operating system…

  • iMac (models from 2015)

  • MacBook Air (models from 2015 and 2017 models)

  • MacBook Pro (2015 and 2016 models)

  • Mac mini (2014 models)

  • Mac Pro (2013 model – cylinder/trash can)

  • MacBook (2016 model)

What won’t Work on Intel Macs

As Apple continues its transition to Apple Silicon, with macOS 13 Ventura, there are a number of features that are limited to Apple silicon-based Macs, with Intel Macs unable to access these options.

  • Live Captions across audio content, including FaceTime.

  • Reference Mode in Sidecar.

  • Emoji support in Dictation mode.

Is It Too Early To Upgrade To macOS Ventura?

Simply put - No. Now that macOS Sonoma has been released, all the main DAWs are supported with macOS 13 Ventura, and checking our searchable database, nearly all software is now supported.

What About Apple Silicon?

This is the status of support for Apple Silicon computers and macOS Ventura with the main DAWs as we understand it.

Not Supported - But Will My Favourite DAW Work?

Back in June 2022, just after macOS Ventura was announced, we wanted to see how stable it is to run several DAWs, Pro Tools, Studio One, Cubase, REAPER, and Logic Pro using the version beta release.

Based on our tests using brand’s demo sessions, as far as we can tell, there are no changes in macOS 13 that would cause issues when using Pro Tools 2022, Studio One 5., Steinberg Cubase 12, REAPER and Logic Pro. But please be aware that we have run these tests to see if any early issues emerge. We used early beta software and do not recommend ever doing this on mission-critical systems. As a result, we cannot and do not offer any endorsement of suitability.

You can learn more about these tests in our article Pro Tools, Studio One, Cubase, REAPER & Logic Pro All Running On macOS Ventura.

That said, in spite of all the caveats, in our early tests, we were impressed by macOS Ventura. It feels snappier than earlier versions, which may be because previous versions were still dealing with the transition from 32bit to 64bit. Furthermore, earlier DAWs were making the transition to Apple Silicon. With the exception of Pro Tools, native Silicon versions are now available for all major DAWs.

Based on these tests, we expect the public release of macOS 13 Ventura will be a smooth transition for most users. With that said, these tests were undertaken with an early beta copy, and so we repeat, we DO NOT RECOMMEND doing this for mission-critical work. We recommend you wait until your DAW is supported by the developer before making the jump.

However, anyone who buys an Apple computer that will only run on macOS Ventura can take some comfort from these tests that your favourite DAW may well work with macOS Ventura, even if it isn’t yet officially supported.

Check, Check And Check Again

We recommend that you search the database to see whether the software and hardware that you use are compatible with macOS Ventura yet. You should wait until all the DAW, plug-in and software brands that you use as well as peripheral manufacturers, are also supporting macOS 13 Ventura BEFORE you upgrade.

Not Here = Not Supported

Absence on this list should be taken as not compatible; initially, the information will be scarce. As soon as brands let us know about their macOS Ventura compatibility, we will update this article and database as we have done with our macOS Mojave Compatibility, macOS Catalina, macOS Big Sur and macOS Monterey Compatibility articles.

Don't Update In The Middle Of A Job

We always recommend that you leave any upgrade until you have some downtime. Experience has told us that upgrades are rarely straightforward, especially OS upgrades as they often have knock-on effects, so wait until you have time to fix the unforeseen problems.

No Support In macOS Ventura For Firewire Connected Devices

Apple chose to discontinue the Firewire CoreAudio driver in macOS 13 Ventura and all subsequent iterations of the macOS.

This has come from a number of brands with Firewire related products…

Apogee Digital - Starting with macOS 13 Ventura, the Apple Firewire CoreAudio driver is discontinued, and Firewire audio devices will no longer work. Please note that our software development for Firewire devices has ended. The last version of OS X we tested with the Ensemble Firewire or Duet Firewire was 10.10 Yosemite. Apogee products affected include the following:

  • X-Firewire option card for Rosetta 200/800 units, and AD-16x/DA-16x units

  • Ensemble (original Firewire model from 2006)

  • Duet (original Firewire model from 2007)

PreSonus - PreSonus has ended development support for FireWire products. This covers the following…

  • StudioLive 16.0.2 Classic (Firewire)

  • StudioLive 32.4.2AI

  • StudioLive 24.4.2AI

  • StudioLive 16.4.2AI

  • StudioLive RM32AI

  • StudioLive RML32AI

  • StudioLive RM16AI

  • StudioLive RML16AI

The last supported version of Universal Control for these products is v3.6.0. This version of Universal Control contains a specific firewire driver file which must be installed. It's a separate installation from the main software. Direct connection through 1394/FireWire on Mac and Windows systems for audio recording and playback and data support ended with this release. To utilize this feature, an older compatible computer with a supported operating system must be used.

Prism Sound - Do NOT update your OS to Ventura. Currently, OS Ventura does not support core audio over Firewire, so the Orpheus and multiple other devices will not work.

Our Advice

Although there are some workarounds they involve reducing the security settings on your Mac, which has risks. If you depend on a device, like an audio interface, that connects to your computer via Firewire, then we recommend that you do not upgrade to macOS Ventura or macOS Sonoma until you have found an alternative solution that does not require a Firewire connection to your computer.

Run Two Versions Of macOS On Your Studio Mac - Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura

You may be stuck between a rock and hard place, needing two versions of macOS on your studio Mac. Or you may just be curious and want to try and see if the newest version plays nice.

With Apple File System (APFS) formatted drives, Apple has done some magic. You can now create dynamic volumes on one drive. What this means is you simply add a second volume, and the APFS file system will assign drive space as needed, so you don’t even need to pre-allocate space when making the volume - it’s almost magic. From Apple’s support documentation;

“Apple File System (APFS) allocates disk space on demand. When a single APFS container (partition) has multiple volumes, the container’s free space is shared and can be allocated to any of the individual volumes as needed. Each volume uses only part of the overall container, so the available space is the total size of the container, minus the size of all volumes in the container.”

In this article, we show how to install two versions of macOS on one Mac, with no reformatting required and all thanks to a handy feature built into modern Macs. It’s easy to do and gives you the flexibility of running a dual-boot Mac in minutes.

macOS Ventura Feature Summary

There is no doubt that Apple’s operating system has been going through some major changes over the last few iterations. With Big Sur, we got a redesigned interface and new features like Control Center and an overhauled Notification Center.

Monterey built on this with new features in FaceTime, like Voice Isolation for improved sound and SharePlay. Monterey also brought Continuity tools like AirPlay to Mac, which allows other Apple devices to be displayed on a larger screen. However, macOS Monterey’s headline feature, Universal Control, didn’t make it onto our computers until March 2022, enabling you to be able to share a mouse and keyboard between Macs and iPads.

With the release of macOS Ventura, there are a raft of new features designed to refine and improve some features that we have enjoyed for years. A lot of what macOS 13 Ventura brings is better integration with your iOS and iPadOS devices, but there are some new features that only Mac users will enjoy.

System Settings

Apple has redesigned the System Preferences and called it System Setting in macOS 13. There is a new sidebar design in System Settings, already familiar to iPhone and iPad users, designed to make it easier to navigate settings and configure your Mac. here is the full list…

  • Refreshed design - System Preferences gets a refreshed design that’s easier to navigate and a new name: System Settings.

  • Simpler navigation - The sidebar makes it easy to move through different settings panes, so you can quickly configure your device — without having to drill into and out of views.

  • Organised by category - Settings are organised by category, such as Appearance, Control Center, and Desktop. And similar categories are grouped close together — providing more consistency across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS.

  • More spacious panes - With more space in each settings pane, it’s simple to find the settings you want right away.

  • Powerful search - If you don’t know where to find an option in System Settings, you can search for it by dragging from the top of the window to reveal the search field. Options that match your search appear in the sidebar.

Background Noises

Some people find that white noise helps them focus or sleep, and in macOS Ventura, Apple now gives users a variety of sounds to choose from. It’s not an obvious feature, but if you know how to turn on Background Sounds, you can set your Mac to play from a set of soothing sounds such as rain or dark noise.

AirPods

Although AirPods are primarily connected to the iPhone, they can be used with a Mac computer, with the connection switching from the iPhone to the Mac automatically. However, in macOS Monterey and earlier, users didn’t get to control much of the AirPod’s settings. The Noice Cancellation could be adjusted for the AirPods Pro, and that was about it.

With macOS Ventura, users now get access to much more of the AirPods settings, just like in iOS. The AirPods settings will appear in Ventura’s System Settings when the AirPods are connected. Then when they’re disconnected, the AirPods settings will disappear.

To get to the settings, connect your AirPods to the Mac. Then open System Settings, and in the left column, scroll down to the section with the settings for input devices, such as the Keyboard and Trackpad. At the top of this section, you should your AirPods.

Spotlight

Talking of searching, Apple has improved Spotlight in macOS Ventura. Now you will be able to find images in Photos, Messages, Notes, the Finder, and the web right from Spotlight. You can even use Live Text to search for an image based on the text inside it. Here is the full list of new features in Spotlight in macOS 13…

  • Preview files with Quick Look - Press the Space bar on a result to view files in Quick Look.

  • Quick actions - Use Spotlight to quickly take action. Start a timer, turn on a Focus, find the name of a song with Shazam, run any shortcut, and more.

  • Rich results - Brings together all the information you’re looking for in one rich result. Available for contacts, actors, musicians, movies, TV shows, businesses, and sports.

  • Image search - Spotlight uses information from images in Photos, Messages, Notes, and the Finder to enable searching by locations, scenes, or even things in the images, like text, a dog, or a car. but only on local files on the device. Also, note that Live Text photo search is available in English, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

  • Web images search - Spotlight allows you to search for images of people, animals, monuments, and more from the web. Only available in German (Germany), English (Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, UK, U.S.), Spanish (Spain), French (France), and Japanese (Japan).

Privacy And Security

  • Lock Hidden and Recently Deleted albums in Photos - The Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are locked by default and can be unlocked using your login password or Touch ID.

  • Rapid Security Response - Get important security improvements to your devices even faster. This isn’t a standard software update. These improvements can be applied automatically between normal updates — without a restart.

Safari

Apple’s browser, which they claim is “the world’s fastest browser”, gets a number of improvements. here is the list…

  • Shared Tab Groups - Share a set of tabs with friends. Everyone can add their own tabs and see the Tab Group update instantly as you work together.

  • New languages - Added support for Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish, Indonesian, and Dutch.

  • Web page image translation - Added support for translating text in images using Live Text.

  • Additional web technologies support - Gives developers more power and control over styling and layout of web pages to enable more engaging content.

  • Strong password editing - Edit strong passwords suggested by Safari to adjust for site‑specific requirements.

  • Wi-Fi passwords in Network Preferences - Find and manage your Wi‑Fi passwords in Network Preferences. Reference and share passwords or delete old ones.

and talking of passwords, Apple announced Passkeys…

Passkeys

Apple is now on a mission to replace passwords for good by introducing Passkeys. Passkeys have been designed to replace passwords with an easier and safer sign‑in method that is end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks. This makes passkeys stronger than all common two‑factor authentication types. They also work on non‑Apple devices.

Nothing secret is kept on a web server, so you don’t have to worry about website leaks compromising your accounts. Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and sync across your Apple devices through iCloud Keychain. Passkeys never leave your device and are specific to the site you created them for, making it almost impossible for them to be phished.

You can use Touch ID or Face ID to authenticate. A digital key is created and can't be phished. It works in Apps and on the web, and Apple has worked with Fido Alliance, including Google and Microsoft, to work across platforms.

Apple Mail

With macOS Ventura, Apple’s email client, Mail gets a number of new features, including improved search, undo send and scheduled send. Here is the full list…

  • Smart search corrections - Intelligent search improves your results by correcting typos and using synonyms for your search terms in English

  • Smart search suggestions - See a richer view of shared content and more from the moment you begin to search for email messages.

  • Missing recipients and attachments - Get notified if you forget to include an important part of your message, like an attachment or a recipient, but only if you are using English

  • Undo send - Easily unsend an email message that you just sent before it reaches the recipient’s inbox, but you only have 10 seconds to hit the Unsend button before it’s too late.

  • Scheduled send - Schedule an email to be sent at the perfect moment.

  • Follow-up - Move sent email messages to the top of your inbox so you can quickly send a follow‑up but only works if you are using English.

  • Remind me - Never forget about an email that you opened but didn’t get back to. Select a date and time to be reminded to have messages resurface in your inbox.

  • Rich link - Add rich links that give your email messages more context and details at a glance.

Messages

You can now edit a message you just sent or unsend a recent message altogether. And you can mark a message as unread if you can’t respond there and then and want to come back to it later. Here is the full list of new features coming to Messages with macOS Ventura…

  • Collaboration invitations - Send an invitation to collaborate on a project in Messages, and everyone on the thread will automatically be added to the document, spreadsheet, or project. Compatible with Files, the Finder, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Notes, Reminders, and Safari, as well as third‑party apps.

  • Collaboration updates - When someone makes an edit, you’ll see activity updates at the top of the Messages thread. Click the updates to get back to the shared project.

  • Messages Collaboration API - Developers can integrate their app’s collaboration experiences with Messages and FaceTime, making it easy to initiate and manage collaboration from the places where you’re communicating with your collaborators.

  • Shared with You API - Developers can build a Shared with You section into their app, so when someone sends you a video or article that you don’t have time to check out at the moment, it will be easy to find the next time you open the app.

With iCloud Shared Photo Library, family memories are in one place for everyone to enjoy at any time, even if you’re not the one who snapped the shot or edited the photo. First, let’s look at the list of new features in Photos…

  • Duplicate detection - Photos identifies duplicates in a new sidebar item, so you can quickly clean up your library.

  • Lock Hidden and Recently Deleted albums in Photos - The Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are locked by default and can be unlocked using your login password or Touch ID.

This feature is only available in English (Canada, U.S.) on iPhone 11 and later, iPad with A12 Bionic and later, and Mac with Apple silicon. This is not supported on Intel Macs running macOS 13 Ventura.

Continuity Camera

Another new feature in macOS 13 is Continuity Camera. With this feature, you will be able to use the camera system in an iPhone with your Mac to do things never before possible with a webcam. Simply bring your iPhone close to your Mac, and it automatically switches to the iPhone as the camera input. And it works wirelessly, so there’s nothing to plug in. Here is the full list…

  • Use your iPhone as your webcam - Use the powerful iPhone camera system as your Mac webcam to do things that were never before possible with a webcam. It works wired or wirelessly, and your Mac can automatically switch to using iPhone as a camera input when you bring it close to your Mac.

  • Desk View - Using the Ultra Wide camera on your iPhone, Desk View lets you show what’s on your desk during a video conference. It mimics an overhead camera and lets you share your desk and your face at the same time, with no need for a complicated setup.

Note that these two features require an iPhone 11 or later.

  • Studio Light A stunning video effect artfully dims the background and illuminates your face, so you won’t need to clutter your desk with external lighting. Studio Light is great for difficult lighting situations, like backlit scenes in front of a window.

Note that this feature requires an iPhone 12 or later.

Home

Apple has overhauled the Home app in macOS 13 Ventura with a design intended to make it simpler to navigate and manage your smart home accessories. In addition, Apple says that the app includes improvements to the underlying architecture designed to make smart home devices more efficient and reliable.

There is a dedicated Home tab, with all of your home’s accessories visible on one screen. Rooms and favourited accessories are brought together in a single tab designed to make it easier to access your often-used accessories. Apple has redesigned the Accessory tiles to make each type of accessory more easier to take in at a glance.

At the top of the app, the Home app now organises your accessories into Lights, Climate, Security, Speakers, TVs, and more. Apple has added a new sidebar layout so that you can access accessories by room, with a new camera view displaying up to nine cameras in the Home tab.

The Home app in macOS Ventura supports Matter, the new smart home connectivity standard designed to allow accessories from Apple, Google, Samsung, and other smart home manufacturers to work together across different platforms. Note that Matter accessories will require a home hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod device.

The new Home architecture is a separate update in the Home app and will be available in a software update later this year. It will require all Apple devices that access the home to be using the latest software. Sharing control of your home and receiving Home notifications require a home hub. Only Apple TV and HomePod are supported as home hubs.

Freeform - coming later in 2022

Freeform is a productivity app so that you and your collaborators can bring ideas to life, which, although announced during the WWDC 2022 keynote, Apple is planning to introduce later in the year in a macOS Ventura update. With Freeform, you will be able to plan projects, collect inspiration, brainstorm with your team, or draw with a friend. Share files and insert web links, documents, video, and audio. You will be able to collaborate in real time by inviting collaborators, share a link, and start working together instantly. Pro Apple Software Updates

Alongside releasing macOS 13 Ventura, Apple also released updates for their video editing software iMovie and Final Cut Pro X.

Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 New Features

The new update lets people export HEVC or H.264 video much faster but only on Apple Silicon Macs.

The new version also improves performance when editing on a Mac that has an ambient light sensor, a component that powers True Tone.
