Is This The Worst Audio Scam Product Ever Sold?

We’ve spent several years highlighting misinformation about audio products, as well as theories about certain aspects of pro audio. However, when we were sent this video we were shocked at the apparent audacity of the vendor.

It’s often joked that the domestic audio hifi community are suckers for a product that claims to do things either not technically possible, or just fails to do the possible very well. However, the pro audio community is also prone to allowing placebo, myth and nostalgia to get the better of them.

In our article “How Bullshit Took Over The Recording Industry - Why Critical Thinking Matters” we said;

“But have you stopped to consider that over the last few years the same issues face us in the recording industry? Not just news, but other things stated as fact are disseminated and before we know it we’ve also started to believe something as truth that may be plain wrong.

Let me ask you a couple of things. Does audio sound better when it is louder? Is bass non-directional? Do summing amplifiers make a difference to the sound? I’m choosing three examples from thousands of things that get written about, discussed and shared in forums, blogs like this one and social media.

Whatever you believe the answer to be to the three questions I just posed, where did you get your answer from? What facts do you have to back up that answer? Are your sources credible? Have you tested the theory yourself?” Read more

It seems the fight is ongoing. Now the latest product to be sold is a network switch that claims to improve audio quality over a regular $30 switch, the product in question costs €800! Linus Tech Tips decide to compare it to one looking, seemingly identical. It’s a 15 minute video, but worth the watch.

You might be watching that video and thinking; “what dumbass would fall for that?”

The reality is, plenty of audio engineers and producers are falling for the same kind of stuff. What makes our April Fools posts so sucessful every year is that they are based in reality, humour is always best when this is the case. Remember this one? What we always hope for is the people who lose their minds over the cost or some other feature of these spoof products, it means it’s close enough to the truth to be believed.

In another article Are We Entering The Age Of Bullshit Plugins? we also highlighted some of the silly stuff happening in our industry. There’s plenty of people trying to reinvent the wheel, even moreso when there’s a pile of investors trying to maximise the market value of a brand.

Our advice; it’s even more essential in an oversaturated market to take every claim about a plug-in, DAW, software, or hardware with a healthy dose of skepticism. There’s a lot of vendors trying to get you to spend money with them, sadly, some will say anything to get you to do it.
