Fab Dupont Demonstrates The Pultec Low End Trick - Free pureMix Video

In this extract from the video ‘How to Listen—Pultec Edition’ Fab Dupont demonstrates the famous Pultec Low End Trick. you might have seen this before but was it using a plugin? Fab has a real Pultec.

Fab demonstrates the trick and helps you understand this counter-intuitive technique using a spectrum analyser and a noise generator to show the EQ curves which result from using boost and attenuate simultaneously on the low end of a Pultec equialiser.

How Does The Low End Trick Work?

I found this image in a very old blog post on the UA website: Analog Obsession: Pultec Plots. It illustrates what happens when the boost and attenuate controls are both active on a Pultec. The attenuate control creates a dip at the upper end of the LF boost, cleaning up the ‘woofiness’ which can result from large LF boosts. This clearing out of the top end of the bass/bottom of the lower mids is extremely well suited to kick drums and it is in this application that the Low End Trick is most commonly found.

Watch the free video extract to see Fab Dupont demonstrate this using a real vintage Pultec EQ.
