Mixing In Surround Using Nugen Audio ISL and SEQ-S Plugins - Expert Tutorials

In this article and free video tutorial from Nugen Audio, we are going to look at using Nugen Audio’s ISL true peak limiter and SEQ-S match and morph EQ as part of your surround workflow.

ISL is a True Peak limiter which supports up to 10 channels of audio. In this video, Freddie explains the pros and cons of ducking and steering which can be an issue, especially in multi-channel audio.

ISL also has a dedicated link control for the centre channel to enable you to control the effect the dialogue in the centre channel has on the rest of a surround mix when processing it with a limiter like the Nugen Studio intersample peak limiter.

Moving onto the SEQ-S EQ plugin, it is a spline EQ with a resizable, direct-draw interface, which makes it very easy to draw the exact curve you need. it can have up to 3 different EQ curves. In the video, Freddie shows how these curves can be assigned to the centre channel, one to the front left & right channels and one curve assigned to the surround channels, which offers significant flexibility over your surround audio as the SEQ-S plugin supports up to 7.1 immersive channels all within one plugin.

When it comes to the Match EQ function SEQ-S can process up to 7.1 audio, however, currently, the Nugen Audio Send plugin only supports stereo and so you will need to use stereo audio for your reference feed for the match eq function in SEQ-S.

What Nugen Audio Say About ISL

ISL is a transparent look-ahead limiter designed to allow you to get on with creative audio production while it takes care of True Peak compliance for you.

ISL uses the standardised True Peak algorithms of ITU-R B.S. 1770 and related standards (including Apple ‘afclip’ True Peak detection) and is suitable for the control of audio for post-production, music mastering and broadcast applications. True Peak limiting can also be used to ensure that downstream codecs (mp3, AAC etc.) do not introduce distortion into the signal.

No need to second guess your sample-peak limiter time and again, or deliberately increase headroom to avoid a downstream problem. Just dial in your True Peak limit and let ISL take care of the rest.

Unlike traditional limiters, ISL provides a TPlim control, automatically adjusting transfer curve parameters for minimally invasive brick-wall protection.

Auto-release monitors incoming audio for low-frequency content, dynamically adapting to prevent distortions and deliver transparent audio in the most demanding of situations.

What Nugen Audio Say About SEQ-S

SEQ-S delivers sculpting power beyond any other EQ. The resizable direct-draw interface makes it easy to quickly fine-tune your audio, with incredible resolution that you can’t get with a traditional parametric interface. The 3 independent EQ curves can be individually assigned to channels across the surround panorama, giving complete control over your spatial environment, with access to stereo, mid/side, 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound operation.

SEQ-S is capable of fluid filter morphs, introducing a wealth of new options ranging from controlled scene transitions up to groundbreaking creative sound design. Seamless transitions between different environments, creative morphs and tempo-locked effects are easily achieved, with full dynamic visual feedback.

Use SEQ-S to capture the flavour of a piece of source audio and match it to your current work – great for restoration work, and as a reference for mastering. Or use this match technique on individual tracks to unify different takes, microphone positions, and more.

Plus, by inverting the match EQ curve, you can achieve a minimally invasive technique for carving out space in a complex mix where traditional EQs won’t cut it.

Fine tune and correct your sound with flexible, detailed envelopes difficult to achieve with a traditional parametric EQ. Plus, take advantage of independent left/right and mid/side operation, even within the same plug-in instance.

Use EQ matching to gently push your sound toward reference material or dive into new creative spheres with filter morphing and tempo locked effects. Ideal for both corrective mix work and gentle mastering polish.

Precise corrections which would be very time consuming with a traditional parametric interface are a breeze with SEQ-S’s flexible nodes and direct draw interface.

Match 'invert' makes it quick and easy to find space for dialogue in a busy soundtrack, avoiding heavy-handed EQ or intrusive ducking.
