Cherry Live Light App - Cool Way To Add Recording Light Using Philips Hue Lighting

Have you ever had a perfect take trashed because someone didn’t know you were recording and came into the room? Cherry Live Light links the record function in your DAW to a Philips Hue Light system. So when you press 'Record', it automatically turns on or changes the colour of your chosen lights. We have the details.

It has always been difficult to have recording lights controlled from your DAW. Cherry Live Light looks like a neat solution by using a Philips Hue Light system. Your light will automatically change colour when you hit ‘Record’ and turn back when you stop. Cherry gives fine-tuned light control, enabling you to set colour, brightness, and more for any number of bulbs.

The Cherry Live Light software, once installed will automatically search your network for a Hue Bridge.

For example with Pro Tools, you enable the global MIDI input for Cherry from the MIDI Input Devices window…

Then add Cherry as a HUI peripheral in the MIDI Controllers tab of the Pro Tools Peripherals window…

Note that the free 7-day trial is fully operational but will stop working after 7 days.

Version 1.9 Of Cherry Light Now Available

New Features in This Version

  • Added a Force On toggle which forces all lights to their Cherry state. This can be useful if you are starting/stopping recording faster than Cherry can handle (such as Quick Punch mode)

  • Changed "Test" button to "Flash Test" for clarity

  • Verified for use on Mac OS Big Sur

Bug Fixes in This Version

  • Fixed an issue where removing Hue bulbs from your system could crash the app.

  • Fixed an issue where some users were unable to launch the app.

What We Think Of Cherry Light

We tested the software with Studio One and our own Hue system. It worked flawlessly enabling either the light to turn on/off or turn red, so it works as advertised. Our only misgiving is the price, whilst it’s a clever use of HUI and HUE, we are not sure if people will think the innovation is worth the $75 price tag, for what is in effect a utility app. If you don’t already own a HUE system then the combined price of this software and a HUE colour starter kit is around $200.

Price And Availability

  • The Cherry Live Light software normally costs $75 but there is an introductory offer at the moment which brings the price down to $50.

  • Be aware that Cherry Live Light is macOS only and you will need to buy some Philips Hue Lights with at least a Hue Bridge and one bulb, perhaps this starter kit would get you going.

  • Cherry Live Light is macOS only and needs macOS Catalina or later.
