Setting Up The Perfect Headphone Mix - Free pureMix Video Extract

In this free extract from Matt Ross-Spang’s new Start To Finish: Matt Ross-Spang - Episode 7 - Recording Acoustic Guitar from pureMix, Matt offers a different perspective on the subject of cue mixes. As he’s getting ready to record Eli "Paperboy" Reed’s acoustic guitar overdubs, he talks about his cue mix philosophy.

One of the most common requests an engineer will hear at a session is, "Can you turn me up in my headphones?" Most musicians and singers are accustomed to hearing themselves way above the rest of the tracks in their cue mix. In commercial studios equipped with personal mixing stations, which allow musicians to control their own monitor mix, you can bet that most people turn themselves up significantly higher than the rest of the band.

To find out more about Matt’s methods go to the Puremix Blog and read about it or better still watch the full video series.

Start to Finish: Matt Ross-Spang

In this Start To Finish series featuring world-renowned producer and engineer, Matt Ross-Spang, and soul star, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, head into the legendary Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, Tennessee to record tracks for Eli’s next record. But they are not alone… Matt and Eli decided to bring along a few of their friends, like Ken Coomer, drummer for the world-renowned rock band “Wilco”, The Hodges Brothers, who have played on historical records from artists like Al Green, Booker T & The MGs, Ann Peebles, and many more, as well as the soulful vocal trio known as “The Masqueraders”.

They’ll start off by learning the songs together and laying down the basic tracks, then move on to overdubs on not just one, but two songs! Once the songs are tracked, Matt Ross-Spang will take the tracks over to his room at Sam Phillips Recording called “Southern Grooves”, to do a hybrid mix with the incredible selection of the classic outboard analog gear he uses to create his unique tones and textures. This is your chance to head into the amazing Sam Phillips Recording and watch as Matt Ross-Spang works with Eli “Paperboy” Reed, King Koomer, The Hodges Brothers, and The Masqueraders all the way from start to finish.
