And The Prize To The Dumbest Audio Product Of 2018 Goes To... MIDIPlus Mirror Audio Interface

We need to warn you before you read on that what we are about to show you is not as far as we can ascertain a joke or a spoof, it’s an ill-conceived attempt at creating a product for women working in audio production.

First reported by the Verge and described by MIDIPLUS as an audio interface “specially designed for females”, the mirror had us pinching ourselves waiting for the gotcha but it seems to be real.

The first question one has to ask is what kind of interface does a female need that a ‘male’ version doesn’t provide? Well according to MIDIPLUS the Mirror interface has it, they include an interface that looks like a make-up set with the knobs replicating shades for eye make-up. But it doesn’t stop there, when you open the lid you get an illuminated mirror so you can fix your make-up while you are recording and mixing. It’s true…

The ad copy is some of the worst we’ve seen, with lines like “audio interface is no longer a formidable device.” Yes because show a regular audio interface to a female and they are lost unless you make it look like a beauty product. What’s next a microphone that doubles up as a set of curling tongs?

The audio interface has not gone unnoticed by some of our fellow engineers with Laura Taylor tweeting this;

Philippa Demonte who is doing some excellent research in speech intelligibility at Salford University replied to Laura’s post on Twitter…

And Expert team member Emma Butt also calling out MIDIPLUS;

Another of our team Lucy Mitchell waded in too…

Women in Film & TV in replying to Lucy said…

“Something tells us that it was a room full of men coming up with that. How utterly ridiculous.”

Even now we can’t help but think this is some vicious prank by a disgruntled ex-employee, please in the name of all that is sacred let it be so rather than face the reality that anyone in 2018 would think that this is a good idea.

Discuss!
