In this, the second part of this new series (you can find Part 1 here) James Ivey of Production Expert and Dax Liniere of Puzzle Factory Sound Studios talk about the next stage of getting your drums ready for recording, damping or dampening.

Starting with the kick or bass drum Dax shows how he likes to use an 80's throwback, the boomerang pillow to control both the batter and resonating head of the drum in one go. They also discuss how this process would work on a more conventional front head as well as James' DrumPort.

Next comes damping the snare drum and Dax demonstrates 3 different ways to control the unwanted ring of a snare drum using O-rings, a Remo Snare Damper and an old leather wallet to achieve very different sounds. ~They also discuss why you should not use Gaffer or Duct tape on your drums as a dampening material.

Damping the drums can really affect the tone and the over all vibe of the kit in a recording so it is well worth the time to get it right and have the kit sounding as good as it can in the room.
