12 Days To A Healthy Studio Lifestyle - Day 8

As audio professionals, our work in the recording studio demands a blend of creativity, technical skill, and long hours. This often leads to a lifestyle where health and well-being can unintentionally take a backseat. Our recent survey of audio professionals shows this is the case, with many neglecting their health.

Recognising this, we've put together a special 12-day plan, tailored specifically for those of us who spend our days (and often nights) in the studio.

Each day, we'll be sharing practical and easy-to-implement tips that focus on four key areas: exercise, mindfulness, diet, and sleep. These tips are designed to fit seamlessly into your busy schedule, offering ways to enhance your well-being without disrupting your creative flow.

Whether you're a seasoned audio engineer, a music producer, or someone who's just started their journey in the world of studio recording, this plan is for you. So, let's embark on this 12-day journey together, making small, meaningful changes towards a healthier studio life.

Stay Hydrated: The Key to a Healthy Studio Environment

In the creative cocoon of a studio, where focus and tech meet, hydration might not always hit the top of the priority list. Yet, it's one of the most crucial elements for maintaining a healthy, productive work environment. This article underscores the importance of staying hydrated, especially for audio professionals, and offers practical tips to keep the water flowing so you can concentrate on honing amazing sounding tracks.

The Benefits of Hydration

  • Cognitive Clarity: Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving – all critical in the detailed work of audio production.

  • Mood Regulation: Even mild dehydration can impact mood, leading to feelings of anxiety or irritability. Keeping hydrated helps maintain emotional balance, a must for a harmonious studio atmosphere.

  • Physical Health: Good hydration supports overall health, including kidney function and cardiovascular health – important for those long hours in the studio chair.

Staying Hydrated: Practical Tips for the Studio

  • Visible Reminders: Keep a water bottle at your workstation. Opt for a large, marked bottle to track your intake and make it a point to refill it regularly. Remember if you are working at a mixing console or around other gear to keep the bottle away from the gear.

  • Regular Breaks: Schedule short breaks specifically for hydrating. This not only ensures you drink enough water but also provides a necessary pause from screen or console time.

  • Hydration Stations: If you work in a facility then set up a water station in the studio with options like filtered water, infused waters (adding slices of fruits or herbs), or even a water cooler. This encourages everyone in the studio to drink more water.

  • Recognise the Signs of Dehydration: Familiarise yourself with the signs of dehydration – dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and dizziness. Responding to these early symptoms can prevent more severe dehydration.

  • Educate and Encourage: Share the importance of hydration with your colleagues and clients. A studio culture that values health and well-being is beneficial for everyone.

Water: The Unsung Hero of the Studio

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits once said; “It’s surprising how many ailments can be cured either with a walk, some sleep, to drinking some water.”

While it’s easy to get lost in the production, overlooking basic health needs can lead to decreased productivity and well-being. Proper hydration is a simple yet effective way to ensure you and your team are always performing at your best.

Mixing Health with Harmony

Remember, in the studio, every element plays a part in the final mix – it’s easy to focus on gear and technique, nut it also includes the health and well-being of its inhabitants.

Staying hydrated might seem like a small detail in the grand scheme of audio production, but its impact is profound. So, make water a permanent fixture in your studio setup, and you'll not only feel better but also likely see a noticeable improvement in your work and creative output. Drink up and let your creativity flow!
