12 Days To A Healthy Studio Lifestyle - Day 10

As audio professionals, our work in the recording studio demands a blend of creativity, technical skill, and long hours. This often leads to a lifestyle where health and well-being can unintentionally take a backseat. Our recent survey of audio professionals shows this is the case, with many neglecting their health.

Recognising this, we've put together a special 12-day plan, tailored specifically for those of us who spend our days (and often nights) in the studio.

Each day, we'll be sharing practical and easy-to-implement tips that focus on four key areas: exercise, mindfulness, diet, and sleep. These tips are designed to fit seamlessly into your busy schedule, offering ways to enhance your well-being without disrupting your creative flow.

Whether you're a seasoned audio engineer, a music producer, or someone who's just started their journey in the world of studio recording, this plan is for you. So, let's embark on this 12-day journey together, making small, meaningful changes towards a healthier studio life.

Rethink Your Studio Setup: The Benefits of a Standing Desk

There’s a physiological time bomb ticking for many of those working in studios. Where meticulous attention to detail and long hours are the norm, the majority of the day is often spent seated. This sedentary nature of studio work, while necessary for focus and precision, comes with its own set of health challenges.

The Problem with Prolonged Sitting

The act of sitting for extended periods has been linked to a number of health concerns. Prolonged sitting can lead to an increased risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. It also slows down metabolic function, contributing to weight gain and obesity. Furthermore, constant sitting can result in poor posture, leading to musculoskeletal issues, including back and neck pain, and other ergonomic-related problems.

Benefits of a Standing Desk

  • Alleviating Health Issues: Standing desks offer a simple yet effective solution to counter the negative impacts of prolonged sitting. By standing, even for part of the day, you can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and boost your metabolism.

  • Improved Posture and Energy: Standing encourages better posture compared to sitting. It engages different muscle groups, helping to reduce the strain on back and neck muscles.

  • Enhanced Circulation and Productivity: Standing improves blood flow, potentially enhancing focus, alertness, and overall productivity. The dynamic position can also foster a more energetic work environment.

Implementing a Standing Desk in the Studio

While it may be impractical in some studios to use a standing desk, there are still ways to ensure you don’t spend hours every day sat crouched over a console.

  • Transitioning Gradually: Start by alternating between sitting and standing. Gradually increase the time spent standing to allow your body to adjust.

  • Ergonomic Setup: Ensure your standing desk is set up ergonomically. The top of your monitor should be at eye level, and your arms should bend at a 90-degree angle when using your equipment.

  • Comfortable Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes to avoid foot or back pain. Consider using an anti-fatigue mat for additional support.

  • Balancing Act: Use a timer to remind yourself to switch between sitting and standing. Balancing the two can help avoid fatigue associated with prolonged standing.

Good Standing Waves

For audio professionals, the switch to a standing desk can be a transformative change. Many of the Experts now work using standing desks.

Not only does it have the potential to improve health and mitigate the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, but it can also enhance energy levels and productivity. By rethinking your studio setup, you can strike a healthier balance between the demands of your work and your well-being. So consider making the stand for your health and your music – your body and your work will thank you.
