Remote Control Of CARBON Mic Preamps Using Pro Tools 2021.10

Pro Tools 2021.10 brought CARBON users remote control of their mic preamps and instrument inputs. This feature makes an already convenient tracking solution for Pro Tools users even more flexible. In this free video brought to you with the support of Avid, Julian Rodgers demonstrates the new facilities offered by this upgrade.

Avid’s Pro Tools | CARBON has 8 built in mic preamps and 2 front panel instrument inputs. These are now controllable from the Pro Tools UI. This opens up lots of interesting possibilities.

  • Control preamp parameters from Pro Tools rather than the front panel of CARBON

  • Save preamp settings with the Pro Tools session

  • Import preamp settings via the Import Session Data Dialog

  • Save and recall preamp settings as a Track Preset

  • Retain mic pre settings so settings persist between different sessions

  • Control mic preamps via Eucon and Avid Control from tablets and phones

In this video Julian demonstrates accessing these parameters while tracking bass via a DI using an amp sim and a mic on a bass amp, all at near zero latency courtesy of the AAX DSP plugins and the Hybrid Engine, all from the comfort of the sofa at the back of his studio.

Why Is Remote Control Of Mic Preamps So Useful?

Remotely controlled mic preamps offer some technical advantages in large scale recordings such as in live sound or the biggest studio applications where keeping the preamp as close as is practical to the performers reduces the chance of cable borne interference or cable losses. These issues don’t apply to the kind of band recordings CARBON is aimed at but for anyone who has tracked a band, on their own, in a cramped tracing space full of equipment, stands and musicians will know how useful being able to adjust microphone preamp settings from the tracking space is.

From being able to flip the polarity of a mic when time aligning it against a second mic by finding the null, to being able to check and toggle phantom power when setting mics, and of course being able to adjust gain and impedance, the remote control of mic settings from mobile devices is reason enough to justify this feature but control from Pro Tools itself, with recall of mic settings just like any other mix parameter is fantastic for recurring sources or clients.
