New Pro Tools 2021.6 Feature - Change Track Widths

In Pro Tools there has never been a way to change the channel width of a track once created. If you make a mono track where you intended to create a stereo one the only way to change it was to delete the track and create a new one. this has been addressed in Pro Tools 2021.6. It’s far from the biggest feature in 2021.6 but it’s useful to know, though when you first notice it it might well be greyed out. Here’s why that happens.

How To Change Channel Width Of Tracks In Pro Tools

Right click on the name of a track and you’ll see a new option - Change Track Width. If this option isn’t greyed out by selecting that new option you can change the width to any of the track widths available, though this can be changed.

Why Is Change Track Width Greyed Out?

This new feature is only available on tracks which don’t have any clips on the timeline. this includes clips on other playlists including MIDI clips but not automation.

Show/Hide Track Widths

There is also a show/hide option on this menu item. This allows the choices of channel width presented to Ultimate users to be restricted. For Non-Ultimate users the choice is between mono and stereo only.

Drag And Drop Plugins Between Tracks Of Different Widths

A related new feature is the ability to drag or Option/Alt-drag Plugins between tracks of different widths freely as long as a version of the plugin exists in the new width.
