Pro Compressor Attenuation Listen Mode In Pro Tools - How And Why To Get The Same Results From Other Compressors - Expert Tutorial

See this content in the original post

Compression isn’t easy to master and novices need to learn what to listen for. That is why the Attenuation Listen mode on Avid’s Pro Compressor is so useful. It nulls the compressor’s output against the dry signal and allows you to hear just the parts of the signal which are being attenuated. This is invaluable for getting to know the effect all the parameters have on the results but particularly the attack and release.

See how this can be used to compress a vocal, how it is easy to set up a similar effect in other compressors and why this technique doesn’t work so well on fixed threshold compressors like the 1176.

Thanks to Jess Orestano for use of the demo recording of Cry.
