EdiCue V3 From Sounds In Sync Goes 64-bit - What You Need To Know

Sounds In Sync have released EdiCue v3, which is the first of their suite of tools that has been transitioned to 64-bit, ready for the release of macOS Catalina, which will no longer support 32-bit applications. Mark Franken, hasn’t just converted EdiCue to 64-bit, he has taken the opportunity to add a raft of new features to EdiCue.

What Is EdiCue?

For those who haven’t come across EdiCue, it is an application designed to enable sound editors and supervisors to create ADR cues and department notes within Pro Tools. These cues and notes are generally created after a spotting session and ideally before anyone starts working on the sound for the project - including the scheduling of actors for record.

Once all cues and notes have been created, EdiCue exports a range of files including ADR scripts and files to support the recording process. These files can be loaded into their partner app EdiPrompt, which displays the cues on-screen and helps automate the recording process when using Pro Tools.

EdiCue Development

Since releasing EdiCue v1 nearly 12 years ago, Sounds InSync have received a stream of user feedback and feature requests for the application. As this list grew steadily over time, these updates created a patchwork of settings in the application with no room to add new features. On top of this, because the PDF layouts were fixed, adding new fields or allowing for changes became difficult to manage. What EdiCue really needed was what a lot of users had been asking for, the option to personally design the layouts of the PDFs it created, and so EdiCue 3 was born…

What Is New In Edicue V3?

  • New 64bit app with updated user interface that is macOS dark mode and HiDPI compatible

  • PDF layouts that can be designed to customise every element including adding logos and selecting which fields to display

  • Controls to style the ADR cue 'Line' text to bold, italic, underline or set the color of the text

  • A 'Segment List' to allow cueing of multiple reels or episodes in a single session

  • The option to export PDFs with editable fields so that TBW PDFs can be edited

  • Detail rows in the ADR summary to breakdown each character by Priority, Cue Status, Reason or Reason Category

  • Additional fields in each cue including a new BVox (Breaths and Vocals) checkbox

  • New 'token' setting fields to customise the contents of the exported filenames and cue numbers

  • Updated Import ADR Data window that automatically aligns the destination fields

  • New PDF data import option to import data from edited fields in an EdiCue PDF. E.g. TBW PDF

  • Production settings file can now be stored in a custom location. E.g. external or network drive

Who Is Using EdiCue?

Tim Hands - Supervising ADR Editor on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

“We used EdiCue for the new Netflix show 'Dark Crystal'. As it’s a puppet show all of the original studio recordings were only ever going to be a guide. So we had to record 10,000+ lines of ADR, although calling it ADR does seem wrong given that we essentially recorded the production audio.

It was epic, very hard work all round, but we couldn’t have made it work without EdiCue.”

Simon Chase - Supervising Dialogue Editor on Mission Impossible - Fallout

“EdiCue was already indispensable software. On shows like Mission Impossible, the recuts came in thick and fast, but using EdiCue meant my sheets were always up to date. Now with version 3 it has outdone itself. The new options allow for such clear sheets so my sessions will go just how I want them to. I’m already using it on my next project.”
