How To Find Polarity Issues When Mixing Drums. Kick Is In Phase But Snare Is Out In The Overheads,- Expert Tutorial

In this premium video tutorial, Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers looks at an interesting issue he found on a drum recording in which the kick was out of phase in the overheads but the snare wasn’t. In this case there isn’t an easy answer about what to do about it because if one channel on the overheads is inverted to pull the snare back into phase, the kick goes out and vice versa.

In cases like this the best advice is to go with what sounds best, as it is for pretty much all decisions in mixing, but using the free Correlometer from Voxengo it is easy to see the issue and address the problem.

See how logical the fix is and how, in context, what looks like a serious issue maybe doesn’t matter quite as much.
