You can use the Avid Pitch II plug-in which comes included in Pro Tools to widen stereo tracks. See how easy it is in this free Expert tip.

Avid Pitch II

I’ve never found a use for coarse pitch shifting. It can be fun to set up swirling delays with a pitch shift so notes spiral up or down as they repeat but pitch shifting with a fixed interval of a third or a fifth isn’t something I’ve ever wanted to use.

The real value of these plug-ins is how good they are used with small pitch shifts for thickening or widening material. Effects like chorus use short modulated delays to add width or thickness but their cyclic nature makes them a little artificial sounding for me. Small pitch shifts are much better, introducing a more natural effect with a less cyclic beating introduced by comb filtering because of the pitch differences, a bit like playing a 12 string guitar.
