Equal Power Vs Equal Gain

When crossfading between two clips, the precise shape of the taper of the outgoing and incoming fade make a big difference to the perceived level across the crossfade. There are two common choices, though other shapes can be chosen if you prefer.

The two common choices are equal power and equal gain and one of these will most likely be the best fit when creating a seamless crossfade. Which is the best choice depends largely on the nature of the two sounds being crossfaded, in this video Julian illustrates this using the correlation between the stereo channels. This is to introduce the idea of correlation between the sounds being crossfaded but in the case of correlation between stereo channels this isn’t directly relevant to the choice of crossfade chosen.
