Why Do It?

The inspiration for this experiment was watching a famous mix engineer using parallel EQ. This way of working is something i've been aware of for a long time but it's never made sense to me. Isn't using an equaliser in parallel just undoing the EQ to some extent?

This prompted a few questions: 

• Is it about workflow and the ability to share an EQ shape across several channels in varying proportions independently of subgrouping?
• Is there some benefit caused by mixing the phase-shifted EQ'd signal back in with the dry signal?
• Are there any downsides which make this a bad idea?
