Spectrum Analysers Vs Spectrograms

Spectrum analysers are very useful tools but there are some things they don't display as well as they might and some things they don't display at all. Some of these are addressed by spectrograms.

Where a spectrum analyser shows amplitude on the Y axis, a spectrogram displays time on the Y axis and amplitude as colour. Because of this a spectrogram can show history and therefore change over time.

I was very taken by the new generation of dynamics plug-ins which, as well as having gain reduction meters, which show the gain reduction at any given instant, also incorporated gain reduction history graphs. I see spectrograms as fulfilling a similar role in frequency analysis
