Case Study - Silent Disco Goes Immersive With Klang Fabrik

I'm convinced that I conceptually invented the silent disco around 2002 when I saw a pair of consumer wireless headphones and put two and two together. Obviously many other people had the same idea and the silent disco has become a popular way around environmental restrictions at festivals and the like.

In this video from KLANG, FOH engineer Tobias Raunigk walks us around his rig and his working method to deliver 3D audio over headphones to his audience using the KLANG:fabrik. This innovative approach is a logical next step for silent disco style events.

Headphone Isolation

If there is any group of people who are definitely going to be aware of the sense of isolation wearing headphones brings with it is is the Pro Tools Expert community. Headphones place us in a private space, hardly conducive to a shared experience.

3D Audio Through Headphones

This head-tracking ability in combination with binaural processing allows a convincing "immersive" experience through headphones with listeners being placed, at least to some extent, in a virtual space sharing the same experience as other users. This development taken in combination with the possibilities offered by the 360 degree, 3D processing in the KLANG system makes for a very interesting development with huge possibilities.

More About The KLANG App

Last year I reviewed the KLANG App, the software element of the KLANG:fabrik, a Dante headphone amp which features built in hardware processing which allows the placement of channels in space independent of head movements, in a similar way to the Waves NX system.
