The Recordist Release Prop Planes 2 HD Pro Library

The Prop Planes 2 HD Professional Sound Effects Library is the result of over two years spent at the local airfield waiting and watching for planes. 30 different aeroplanes were recorded in 24-bit 96kHz resolution with various high-end microphones and handheld recorders. Single, twin and turboprop planes were captured at multiple distances and airspeeds. Engine starts, high RPM warm-ups and ground taxi manoeuvres are also included.

On one occasion the Aero Commander 560-A was also recorded starting with a Soundfield ST450 MKII placed to the side of the plane. A Sony PCM D100 was placed inside a Vans RV-4 and captured the entire flight from start to shut down. Most of the recordings happened spontaneously with permission from each pilot as they were either on their way in or on their way out. Other high-speed pass recordings were planned and the pilots had fun doing it… of course. It’s not that often a pilot can rip over a runway at 180mph.

HISSandaROAR release Noise Source Library

Their Noise Source library could be considered a sequel to their EMF Library although this time we have pursued ‘noise’ as sound design sound material inspired by the first generation of video games such as Defender™

If you played any of the first generation of video games you will already appreciate how noise can be used as a component of sound design - the iconic sounds of Defender instantly spring to mind as a phenomenal creative achievement using scarce resources. But now that our tools and resources have expanded we decided it was time to revisit the potential of noise, by creating a huge new resource of source material.

Their first recording sessions captured raw noise, pitched & unpitched, from their modular synth, using Eurorack modules such as Zorlon Canon, RF Nomad, QR Rainbow, ErrorTools Dirty Glitch, Doepfer A118, Mutant, TipTop and Audio Solutions modules. They also captured noise from synths such as Roland SH101, Korg MS10, plus a circuit bent Casio synth, retro game and a bent Radioshack Reverb/feedback console.

Next, they focused on radio, using a 40m dipole aerial with a Yaesu multiband receiver, along with DSE and Sony domestic multiband radios, scanning across MW, FM and SW to capture a vast range of unexpected textures, tones and strange noises.

Lastly, they focused on noise floors, capturing high-gain recordings of stereo cassette, mono Nagra 4.2, Roland 201 and 555 tape echo and a huge range of vinyl (including the blank flip side to a photography tutorial vinyl set)

Into The Wild: A Postmortem On A Wildlife Recording Trip With Jason Wolford

There is a great interview with Jason Wolford, Senior Audio Designer and recording enthusiast on the Designing Sound website. Jason recently participated in the Introduction to Wildlife Sound Recording program hosted by the Wildeye International School of Wildlife Film-making. This incredible opportunity takes individuals that are interested in the sound recording of wildlife and environments and transports them to a remote location where they can learn more and become immersed in this incredible craft. On a trip hosted by BBC’s nature recordist Chris Watson and renowned artist Jez Riley French, Jason travelled to a remote part of Sweden, where he did nothing but experience and capture wildlife sound. The following clip is just one of the many beautiful recordings that Jason captured.

Creating The Wild, Otherworldly Sound Of 'American Gods'

‘American Gods’ is a critically-acclaimed, gory and wildly ambitious series based on author Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name. For A Sound Effect, Jennifer Walden interviews supervising sound editor Brad North, sound designer David Werntz, and re-recording mixer Joe DeAngelis discuss just what it took to flesh out its otherworldly sound.

As far as the mixing was concerned, it was a matter of wrapping all of the sounds around us. The show runners were very into hearing everything come out of every speaker. There was no rule that it had to be a certain way. It was using sound however it might lend itself to the scene. Sometimes we ended up with more sound in the surrounds than we did in the front because it just felt weirder that way. We wanted to cocoon the audience as much as we could with the sound, either the music or the effects, or a combination of both. The show is mixed in 7.1 and we were all speakers all the time.

You can read the interview in full on the A Sound Effect blog.
