This Week’s Featured Pro Tools Expert Interview

This week’s featured interview is James’ interview with engineer and producer Greg Wurth. James caught up with Greg at his LA studio to talk about his work both past and present, his gear choices and his move into creating the Greg Wurth Audio brand.

Questions From The Community

  • Larry Alexander is mixing a show for PBS and was asked to deliver my work using the "SMPTE" track order being L-R-C-LFE-Ls-Rs. It seems that Pro Tools busses always use the "Film" track order which is L-C-R-Ls-Rs-LFE. He is recording onto a 5.1 audio track and wants to know how to get these tracks into the "SMPTE" track order to deliver to PBS.
  • Michael Lindner has been a Pro Tools user since the days of Audiomedia 2 cards in a Quadra 650. At present he has a Power Mac G5 2.7 dual water cooled PPC Mac OSX 10.4.9, running Pro Tools 7.3.1; Digidesign 002r Black Lioned; Waves Platinum plug-ins, Spectrasonics, Reason 4, Amplitube, Sampletank, UAD pci card plus a few others. For him, this is an ultimate system. However, he fears that one day it will all come crashing down even though he has an off-site hard drive backup and even another Mac in mothballs. So he asks if we have any suggestions to keep his system going or preparing for the big change?

Source Connect Now

As you may know, we are spread out around the UK & Europe when we record the podcast. In the past, we have used a variety of internet based solutions so we could hear each other.  We have settled on Source Connect Now which gives us ISDN equivalent quality audio using a Chrome browser, no software to install. You can get a free account from Source Elements.

Find Of The Week

  • Mike - In the comments on Dan’s excellent setting up a business article, someone asked about recommendations for tools to help your business and Although it is not exactly something I found this week it is something that I know is saving me a lot of money and that is TransferWise.  If you do any international payments you will know the charges and crap exchange rates you get from your bank. TransferWise gets around those charges.
  • James - A very cool trick for placing the screws in the perfect spot for hooking power blocks into racks or on walls. Check out the video from 5 Minute Crafts
  • Peter - Aputure A Lav Microphone - only $35 - wired omnidirectional lavalier microphone with excellent bang for a buck and best sounding and best build quality in that price range that I have tried. Has a little built in battery that you charge via USB - quoted battery life is over 200 hours on 1 charge! I'm sure I will use it on some piece to camera videos soon so you can hear it.
