Roller Coaster Sound Effects Builder And Amusement Rides & Ambiences From Effect Sense Sound Libraries

Pyry Survo from Effect Sense Sound Libraries has been in touch to tell me about his first two sound libraries just released. They include clean multi-microphone recordings of very hard to access objects: roller coasters and amusement rides. Pyry tells that the indie sfx library community thinks this is the first roller coaster library ever published. There are roller coaster pass-bys with and without screaming.

And by the way, the roller coaster pack has also two Pro Tools sessions with synced multi-position tracks to make things even easier. They worked hard to capture as much useful material, for both libraries as we could when they had full access to the rides. All sounds were recorded in Särkänniemi amusement park, Tampere, Finland.

Roller Coaster Sound Builder includes high-quality recordings for five different roller coasters from classic steel coasters to aggressive impulse coaster. This collection includes clean roller coaster pass-bys, onboard recordings, and classic roller coaster screams.

The roller coaster pass-bys were recorded without background noise in an amusement park that was closed to the public. A lot of natural screams with different intensities have also been included, that were recorded during a regular summer day in the amusement park.

Want To Learn More About How These Libraries Were Recorded?

Asbjoern Andersen from A Sound Effect has interviewed Pyry for the A Sound Effect blog and in this interview, Pyry shares the story behind the making of this impressive collection.

Roller coasters were maybe the most challenging sound sources I have ever recorded. A lot of planning was needed, indeed. There is an amusement park (Särkänniemi amusement park) in my hometown. I had visited the park many times, and recording the rides had been in my mind for a long time.
I was lucky to have friends working in the park staff. I think it would have been really difficult to gain access to the park without personally knowing anyone from the staff. I already knew a thing or two about how the park works before I introduced them my idea to record high-quality roller coaster sounds. When I did, they were excited about it.
Three of the roller coasters were also recorded onboard. Zoom H6 was selected as the onboard recorder because of its small size, light weight, and multiple XLR inputs. The microphones used onboard were a Sennheiser MKH50, a Shure SM57, two Crown GLM-100 lavaliers, and Ehrlund EAP contact microphones. The recorder and microphones were tied into the car with zip ties and tape.

Hzandbits Urban Winds Volumes 1 and 2

I spotted these two libraries on Twitter and thought I would share them with you all.

Urban Winds 1 consists of medium and high-wind sounds. You get empty streets and construction sites, office exteriors and the port of Aarhus. You will hear plastic that flutters or thrashes, metal fences that clatter and vibrate, pipes and cavities resonating in the gusts.  All aimed to strike the balance between variety and nuance, designed to give something to build a scene around. In that sense, this really is a construction kit of sorts.

You will hear very little human activity – other than distant traffic. They were recorded mostly at night, and in large, undisturbed areas – and on one occasion in the aftermath of a violent storm (the kind that rips the tiles off the roofs). All sounds were captured in Aarhus, Denmark.

Urban Winds II gets you medium and high-wind sounds. You get empty streets and alleys, office exteriors and a marina. There are steel wires that whistle and whip in the wind, pipes and cavities resonating in the gusts. You are also ambiences and a few specifics. This collection is designed to pick up where Urban Winds left off. Again there is very little human activity – other than distant traffic as they were recorded mostly at night, and in large, undisturbed areas.

In some of the recordings, you will hear wind buffeting – more of the windscreen than the microphones – but there is some. In some cases, they chose to tame the most violent events, but others were left in because in many cases, wind noise reduction simply took away too much of the forcefulness.
