Gorilla Expands With HHB Avid S3 And Pro Tools - Is This A Growing Trend?

Cardiff-based post-production house Gorilla has expanded its audio dubbing capacity with the purchase of two more Pro Tools systems and an S3 control surface from HHB Scrub. Gorilla is already home to Wales' first Avid S6 installation. Now they have built a new dubbing suite to complement the two existing S6 dubbing theatres, also equipped by Scrub. with the second Pro Tools system intended to meet growing demand for foley services.

Gorilla Technology Director Rhodri James told us about being an "all-Avid house"...

We can move sessions quickly and easily between rooms, which is a huge benefit to productivity and accommodates a collaborative workflow. Of course Pro Tools is also what our dubbing mixers want and expect to use, and Avid have made a major step forward with the launch of the S6 and S3, producing consoles with a world-class look and feel.

With 70 Avid suites, Gorilla is the largest post-production facility in Wales, working on a huge variety of work from sport, drama and factual programming through to high-profile entertainment shows like Channel 4’s Posh Pawn and One Born Every Minute'.

With an increase in devolving more post-production work to the regions, the quality of support is more important than ever, as Rhodri tells us...

Scrub is staffed by experts who know all about what they sell. They always give us solid advice, putting our needs first, and their support is top notch – our operators can call at any time if they encounter a technical or licensing problem, or even if they just need a bit of ‘how to’ assistance. We really value Scrub’s focus on post, but being part of HHB is equally as important. Their vast product catalogue truly makes the Scrub/HHB combination a one-stop-shop for all our audio technology needs

Is the Avid S3 Gaining Traction In The Post Sector?

This is not the first story we have heard about Avid S3 control surfaces going into post facilities. When Mike was at the launch of Halo Post Production's Dolby Atmos Studio 1 recently he couldn't help notice an Avid S3 alongside the DFC console.

When Mike interviewed James Mather Supervising Sound Editor On Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation at IBC  he shared his experiences of mixing in the box using an Avid S3. Based on anecdotal evidence we are seeing more and more Avid S3 controllers going into post facilities or being bought by dubbing and re-recording mixers for use at home. If you are using one, please share your experiences in the comments below.
