In this video Julian illustrates, with examples, how traditional EQ, while perfectly suited for its original job - "equalising" or restoring peaks and dips in response caused by the room or the equipment used, the frequencies of which don't change as the content changes. However all of us try to use EQ to manipulate the timbre, or internal harmonic balance of sounds, the frequency or which change as the pitch of those sounds change.

EQ Which Works Like Keyboard Tracking Synth Filters

Surfer EQ tracks the pitch of incoming audio and, in a way very similar to a synth filter, changes its frequency to track the harmonic content of incoming, monophonic audio. Using a sawtooth wave from a synth, which has a very clear harmonic structure, Julian uses Surfer EQ to change the timbre of sounds in a way which is consistent irrespective of the pitch of the incoming signal and contrasts this with a traditional fixed EQ.
