Tip - Utility Applications Are Not Always Your Friends

In my recent article about the restoration of my faith in Apple I told you about "My Genius" and how he set to work fixing my poorly MacBook Pro and he let me into a couple of interesting secrets.

Not All Utilities Are Good For Your Machine

I had been using two different clean-up applications on my MacBook Pro and MacPro machines. These are Clean My Mac and MacKeeper.  My Genius informed me that MacKeeper is actually a kind of SpyWare and MalWare application that I had been paying for! It does nothing for the upkeep of my machine. He deinstalled it for me there and then.

He then showed me a free application called Malwarebytes. This is a free utility that looks across your system and detects and removes MalWare nasties.

I'm not saying that all of these "fix all, cure all" applications are bad news but beware, you need to know what you are installing on your workstation and laptop Macs.

If you have found any good or bad utilities for Mac or Windows please let us know in  the comments below.
