Interview - Michael Carnes From Exponential Audio On Reverb Pro Tools Expert Podcast Extra

In this series over the extended Christmas holiday, we are featuring 5 interviews from our growing archive of interviews, all of which you can find on our Interviews page.

Back in April 2013, Mike Thornton had an extended chat with Michael Carnes from Exponential Audio.

You might be forgiven if you haven't heard of Michael but you will certainly be aware of his work.

Michael was a designer at Lexicon and worked on iconic units like the PCM80, 90 and the 960L before moving on to the Lexicon plug-ins. In this extended interview, Michael talks about his history in the audio and recording world, his over 20 years at Lexicon developing some of the world's top reverb units.

He also talks about the difference between hardware and software reverbs and also shares his thoughts on the difference between algorithmic and convolution reverb technologies.

During the interview, Michael also discusses the constraints of DSP audio processing solutions and optimising his plug-ins to maximise sound and minimising native processing load.

This one hour interview is an excellent resource for those who want to know more about how modern reverb solutions work.

In recent years he has decided to do his own thing and has run Exponential Audio that has developed a growing range of reverb and effects plug-ins including Excalibur and his most recent releases for immersive audio workflows, Stratus and Symphony.
