Drum Replacement Using Superior Drummer 3 Tracker

Released in mid 2017, Superior Drummer 3 took the Music Production industry by storm with the inclusion of not only a flawless collection of drum samples and instruments but also a powerful drum replacement feature called Tracker. 

Over the years there has been a fair few variations of drum replacement software but no solution, up until the release of SD3 Tracker, had ever made the process of replacing drum hits so effortless.

Superior Drummer 3 Was Worth The Wait

The previous version of Superior Drummer, SD2, was Toontrack's flagship drum library instrument and it was looking a bit long in the tooth. Superior Drummer 2 users felt as though Toontrack were maybe focusing too much on Superior Drummer 2's sibling EZ Drummer 2, which is also a very powerful instrument in its own right. Superior Drummer 3 though was definitely worth the wait. 

New Powerful Mixer With Built-in Effects & Processors

I have used drum library instruments in my workflow for over ten years, I believe I've tried all of them at some point. Out of all the drum library products I've used not one has ever got me mixing within the GUI until I got my hands on Superior Drummer 3. I used to output each channel from an internal mixer within a drum VI to aux tracks in Pro Tools as I felt my third party plug-ins were better than internal plug-ins in drums VIs, but Superior Drummer 3 changed the way I work with drum libraries. Now I mix my drum parts exclusively in SD3 because the internal plug-ins (effects, EQs, dynamic processors) are absolutely brilliant, the routing is intuitive and the mixer is extremely well laid out.

Winner - Peter Walters

I have been making music for very many years, with my output spread across different genres. I am the keyboard player of The Hotel Whisky Foxtrot (find us on Spotify/iTunes - and our long-delayed 1st vinyl LP and CD/Download will be available in Spring 2018), but also write for choirs and schools. An authorised musical adaptation (with book by Alex Cooper) of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ achieves it’s second production in early 2018, while my version of Hans Christian Anderson’s ‘The Snow Queen’ was performed with a choir of 350 school children in Northampton’s Derngate Auditorium. My works for adult SATB choirs have been performed in London and New York. I also write music for picture, with award-winning scores for short films and trailers. An early score co-written with Paul Hedges was broadcast on Thames TV having won national awards. I have written and arranged for a notable Bengali singer with performances at festivals and on a Sky TV channel. 

I work from a home project studio based around a MacPro Tools set up, with the Roland Studio Capture 16x10 Audio interface, with Avid Artist externals, and NI Komplete Kontrol keyboard, as well as Moog, Roland, Oberheim, and Kawai synths and pianos.

Superior Drummer will be very well used. I already use EZDrummer - and will obviously import all the EZZ content into Superior Drummer - the MIDI content can then be used with the Superior kits. My music for picture relies on software drums, and the quality I will be able to achieve with Superior Drummer will be of real value. Within my band - The Hotel Whisky Foxtrot - as a 3 piece (myself on Keys, Rupert Flindt on Bass, Paul Hedges on Guitar and vocals) we use drums and percussion from various sources. The ability to get the drums from Superior Drummer should lift our sound further, and make up for our lack of a living breathing drummer (though we will still use one live).

Scoring my musicals for pit band will be aided by having the quality of drums to work with, and preparing backing tracks for Schools or companies without access to live musicians with be enhanced. Overall - Superior Drummer will find it’s place in much of my musical output!
